to a resturaunt anybody who has worked as a waiter or bartender will agree ,,, it is across the board the average a 10 to 12 percent tip when the norm is 15 to 20

Its so amazing to see the total ignorance of the answers for this. .. not one of you even considers this to be remotely true. Heaven forbid we should actually say anything about blacks that may be true. My goodness they ENVER do anything wrong do they?/ if we even say anything remotely bad we have observed. Then we are racist. You people are all truly idiots. Just like people come on here and say oh no. we never commit these types of crimes and all that. Phew. Rose colored glasses. But to answer this question. They are arrogant. That ids their lifestyle to take and take and not bother giving anything even for good service. I have witnessed it first hand many times over the last 20 plus years.. so all you people who just think this is racist. Get a life.

It probably depends on how the waiter or bartender treat them. I was a (white) waitress for many years, and I never had a problem with a black customer. In fact sometimes they tipped noticeably higher than some of the white customers. And I'm not talking black men either, families and women too, so don't play that card.
in response to Calvin's answer below, some of them may be arrogant, but that doesn't change the fact that I never had a bad experience with them. In my personal experience the worst customers EVER were white businessmen between the ages of approx, 25-45. THEY were always grumpy, picky, non-appreciative, and more apt to complain at the slightest thing that was wrong, and they tipped worse than old folks on a fixed income! >:p

I am a food-server/waiter at a upscale dinner restaurant in a large metro city and have patrons from many diverse ethnic groups. I have not experienced any bad tips from black patrons as compared to the rest, and certainly not on a "notorious" scale. But over the past 4 years, I find the cubans to be the most annoying and tactless. Their tips don't compensate either for putting up with rudeness. But generally, patrons who tip well are from any ethnic group but I usually switch stations to avoid our regular cuban patrons.

I think you may have answered your own question. If you have already taken a poll to find out that this is the average, how is your attitute toward black people when you serve them? Are you providing them with the same quality of service that you would someone else. Have you already made up your mind that you are going to get a bad tip so you give bad service? Be the best that you can be and your efforts will pay off.

I don't think it is a racial thing. People for some reason or other unfortunately already have in mind the way they will tip. It takes all kinds and is called dealing with the public. Take it from an unhappy waitress of seven years, but can't give up the money. It is like a secret.

I think women are the worst tippers and the most annoying patrons, and I am a woman. I experienced this when I used to be a waitress - that is why I always tip well now.

I was a waitress and always got a 15% tip on average - often times a lot more $$. And this was regardless of the race, gender, religious affiliation, marital status, and sexual orientation of my customers. I'd like to see that evidence you have about afro-americans (as they are called now). Perhaps it's your condemming attitude towards those customers that make you get less in tips - ya think?!?!

Well, here in the south, everyone tips badly.....Blacks, Whites, EVERYONE. LOL I know, it sucks, but you can't limit it to just one nationality. Because no one in one nationality does one thing ALL of the time. That's like saying all White people listen to rock and country music.

It depends on the service I get. If I don't get good service I wont tip and I don't care what you think. If the service is good then I will tip.
