I agree with you it's never ok to hit someone unless its a case of self defense.

I am going to address your question using generalizations, because in your question YOU referenced the law--and in order to govern a mass of people as close to fairly as possible (although ultimate fairness is unattainable,) we must assess how certain laws will affect the MAJORITY of the people. We aim to get as close to serving the public as possible, and will never suceed 100%. But as we strive to come AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE: Majority rules. First, Biology 101: Men are equipped with testosterone. This hormone increases muscle mass, overall physical strength, and makes a person more aggressive. The higher the levels of testosterone, the more aggressive and stronger a person is. Roid rage is a term used to describe someone who has taken steroids and has consequently experienced an increase in their anger or physical violence. Therefore: #1. *IN GENERAL* [the hardest concept for some to understand,] men are MORE LIKELY to lash out physically. #2. When they do, the result is more devastating due to their strength. We are still very much the physical beings we were hundreds of years ago, even though our societal roles have changed. Men are designed to be the hunters and gatherers as well as the provider of safety and protection. This is why they've been equipped with muscles. I won't get into what estrogen produces, bc that's a topic for another forum. The law exists to protect citizens--PHYSICAL SAFETY and well-being. Not to protect their pride. Men want to hit BACK bc their ego or sense of pride has been jeopardized. Rarely does a female pose a legitimate physical threat to a male. If she had a weapon and he had bruises when the cops showed up, it might be different. However. If when the cops showed up, the girl is on the ground, bloody and bruised... and the guy is standing and shows not much physical trauma but a few scratches that he easily could've WALKED AWAY FROM without retaliating physically...well the cuffs will go on him. And they should. The law compensates for what women lack physically. It's the only way to make the world a little more fair and safe for them. Am I condoning violence of any kind. Certainly not. But law enforcement is not there to be the judge and jury and decide whether or not the "btch" deserved it....they're there to keep citizens safe and when she's in danger and he's not, it doesn't matter who threw the first punch.

When I punch a man I fully expect to be punched back. Then we'll see who is the better fighter.

As I tell my children, people should use their words and not their fists. It's unacceptable for anyone to hit another person, regardless of sex.
