As long as it is only the screen on the laptop that went bad and no other parts, yes it should work. Depending on the laptop you have you might need to see the desktop to enable the output to the other monitor or there may be a keyboard shortcut. On my laptop the shortcut is Fn+F4

Personally I would rather buy another laptop since it is clumsy to have so much hardware on the desk. Laptops are well worth their weight in gold for ease in transport and portability.
If you are buying a very pretty flat screen monitor, then you would need a normal keyboard, and logic says you might as well buy the rest of the desktop.
Bring the laptop to a friend who knows how to fix computers. Maybe its not really dead, He'll know.

Depending on what the cause of the "death" of your screen is....if it's just the screen, it will probably work fine with a new monitor...best is if you test it before you by a monitor...try connecting a friends monitor and see if it works...then you'll know for sure.

It might work because when a thunderstorm came to my house it fried the screen. So I decided to hook up my old computer monitor and it worked until I got a new one. So try it and if it doesn't work try another method

As long as your video card is not bad then it should work no problem. As far as how you switch it to monitor mode it depends on the laptop. My laptop had a picture of a laptop and a scree on the F3 button which is how you switch mine.
