The rapper-turned-mogul-turned-rapper, who is also co-owner of the NBA's New Jersey Nets, has signed a deal that will make him a player in NBA Live 07, which hit stores September 25.
The deal gives people who buy a pair of Reebok's S. Carter Basketball IV shoes at Champs Sports retailers a special code to unlock the Jay-Z character in Electronic Art's NBA Live 2007 on the Xbox 360 and PS3. Champs Sports will offer the deal starting Wednesday.
"I always want to reach out to people in new and ground-breaking ways and this collaboration with Reebok and EA does that by combining several things important to me: basketball, gaming, and footwear," said Jay-Z. "NBA Live has always been one of my favorite games, and I'm excited to play the latest edition and to be a part of it."
The Jay-Z player is not just Jay-Z in a jersey, though. The rapper's game will be a blend of the talents of some of his favorite players, with Allen Iverson's speed, the shooting of Peja Stojakovic, and the ups of Baron Davis.
"The players Jay-Z chose to have his character modeled after would be on the ultimate wish list of any basketball fan," Brent Nielsen, senior producer of NBA Live 2007 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, said in a statement. "Fans will have fun and enjoy the opportunity to play with a character with superhero-like qualities that we have created for Jay-Z."
But the Jay-Z character isn't just a free agent. The mystery code also unlocks Jay-Z's home team, the S. Carter All-Stars, and gives the team a home field by granting access to a special S. Carter/Reebok court. In a strange reversal of traditional marketing, you have to buy the shoes to see them advertised onscreen.
