I know the blows wouldn't be as good in other sports like basketball or baseball, but why don't they just let them square off?

A hockey fight is what I would consider a gentleman's' dual ( work with me here ). Both participants are willing to go at it and settle it right there. The intent to injure is not the desired result, it is to make a stance against the opposition. ( I am aware there have been exceptions. )

In other sports a problem is that the fans could easily enter the playing field in baseball, football and basketball. Some hot-head would jump in the middle of two players going at it. With hockey you have the separation of the glass, and people have zero footing on the ice.

Another problem... Have you seen an NBA ruckus? It is comical at best. Talk about a sissy-slap-fight.

You also have to look at the positioning of players on the field of play. Hockey players aren't generally as close to other players on their team. Also hockey is the only sport where when a fight starts it doesn't turn into a scrum on the playing surface. It is not allowed by any stretch of the imagination but other than football you can't hit your opponent with a legal hit that may make you or a teammate upset.

Fighting isn't actually allowed in hockey, you go to the box for it. I suppose aside from the culture of the other sports, there's the fact that hockey players can play with broken fingers. Besides, if a hockey enforcer is injured/suspended the team can just bring up another tough guy from the farm. I don't think a MLB or NBA carries expendable players. In any case there is much less fighting in the NHL than there used to be, other leagues will likely follow.

Well, in baseball, it takes a lot to get into a fight, like an intentional pitch to the head. In basketball, if there is a fight, it would most likely spill into the crowds and that would be dangerous. In hockey, they have the boards to protect the players from the fans, and all it takes to get into one is "wanna fight?"

Go Leafs and Darcy Tucker.

Because it's against the rules in other sports.
That's like asking why a hockey goalie can't use a baseball bat... different rules for different sports.
If all the rules were the same for every sport, there would only be one sport... that would be pretty boring.

They really should let the baseball players fight... It'd be one of the funniest comedies ever. Its not every day that you see a bunch of overweight n overpaid sissies get in to a fight.

No, seriously dude, baseball players would stop fighting as soon as they feel its time to pic their every 3 second wedgie. As for basketball players, those guys are always so busy bad mouthing the refs that they don't have time to fight each other. In hockey, you get penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct if you don't shut your yap.

Most fights in the NHL end quickly and harmlessly because of the fact that they're on ice. The fight is over as soon as one guy muscles the other off their skates. In other sports the players are standing on their own two feet and could wail the hell out of each other for awhile.

It's just a show to get the fans into the game and support their team.

You ever see Lacrosse. Same as ice hockey, only 5 minute penalties. I know the outdoor season is over now, but the NLL(box lacrosse) just signed a deal with OLN for a game a week this winter, I think starting at the end of December. Check it out if you get the chance, and no 2-1 boring games either, like ice hockey.

beacause it's not allowed in hockey either! when two or more players start a fight on the ice (or off the ice for that matter), the ref will pull them apart (if he/she can!) and gice them a major penalty, if either of the players, or both, are injured, he will send them both back to their chaning rooms, either for 10 minutes or for the rest of the game. he could give them a match penalty or a game misconduct penalty or something like that.
when you look closely at the rules put up by the international ice hockey federation, you'll see that it's not allowed to check a player who hasn';t got the puck, either. just because the ref doesn't always give out a punuishment when this happens, doesn't mean it's allowed!
it's not allowed in other sports for the same reasons: you shouldn't waste your time fighting, coz it delays the game! you're their for the game, if you want to fight: become a boxer!

well lets see..its not to easy to stop big tough guys fully dressed in equipment stop from fighting, plus if baseball players fight, it wouldnt be considered a fight..more of a comedy, and if basketball players fight..since theyre very thin..it would look like tooth picks fighting.

hey take a look at this fight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUEVA67oCYc&mode=related&search=
