A. Hill of England in the 1st Test Match played between England and Australia from 15th to 19th March, 1877.
He took the first wicket when he bowled N.F.D. Thompson of Australia for 1 run. He is also the player to take first catch in the history of Test Cricket, when he took the catch to dismiss T.P. Horan of Australia in the bowling of Shaw

All of these answers are wrong. Everyone here is answering a different question - who was the first person to take a wicket in TEST match cricket. The first person to take a wicket in cricket history is unknown, because nobody knows exactly how old cricket is! There are suggestions that it came over with the Normans as a form of croquet (explaining the similarity in the names), there are references to it or a similar game many, many times before Spofforth was even born!
These are all interesting answers - probably more interesting than mine! But they aren't the answer to THIS question...
