Well that's a good one. I think the original superhero was superman. And it's creators during the 30's did not really suit him up with a spandex. It was a circus attire it could be cotton. Spandex was not invented yet. And the greenhornet and kato does not wear spandex they wear a trenchcoat. :)

Well since most superheros are men- I would say there are 2 reasons for the spandex. 1-to make them look better (or bigger) and 2-because it is easy to wash and dry. I mean really can you picture them dry cleaning their suits or hand washing and hanging to dry?
