Im not sure if Im in the right health group but when I had my son I noticed his right big toenail looked like it had a crack right in the middle of his nail.I showed his doc this. She said wait and see if it bothers him.At age 6 months the nail cracked even worst causing his toe to become sore and red.Took him to a different doc and explain it was cracked at birth but got worst.also question why his nails grow so slow.He was put on antibiotics incase the redness was from infection although he had no sore on his toe.Now all his nails on his right foot crack easy but not in the middle and left foot toenails starting to do the same.Remember he was born like this with the one toenail being messed up.He also drinks alot of milk, weighs 37pounds,is 22 months old now with severe asthma ishis only illness and weighs 38 pounds. What could be wrong with his toenails and why is docs not seeing it as a problem?

I am not exactly sure what is going on with your infants toes, although I know sometimes nail show vitamin deficiencies. I am wondering it if is an ingrown toe nail that presents like a cracked toe nail. Some MD, at least those who don't know, may not be concerned about the problem.

I am also wondering if your child has any sort of allergies that might be presenting with asthma like symptoms as well as the symptoms of nail cracking.

You may also want to check into asthma sites that deal with asthma in infants as well. Sometimes allergies present as breathing difficulties with increase mucous production.

Good luck!!

Toenail appearance is determined by heredity and environment. The most common causes of yellow and cracked toenails are: our genes; fungus infections; exposure to extreme perspiration, or moisture (if your shoes and socks get wet, and stay that way for long periods of time); exposure to certain chemicals (oils, gasoline, resins, etc.); certain skin conditions will cause these problems (such as psorasis, eczema, and allergies to nail polish — prolonged use of nail polish will cause the nails to yellow and crack in some people); and some systemic diseases, such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. If you see your physician regularly you can probably rule-out systemic diseases as the cause. If your shoes remain dry, and you do not perspire excessively, then the causes are either heredity or fungus infection. To determine if you have a fungus infection of your toenails you should see a podiatrist who can take a culture of the nails. If you do have a fungus infection, it can easily be treated with either topical or oral medications.

I hope this helps.

The doc can't treat it! It can be helped with a good diet and kid friendly supplementation. The best for kids on the market are Usanamils they have the correct amount of all the nutrients and levels that won't cause toxicity damage over time. They ranked #1 in North America.

Have you ever thought about a podiatrist? Maybe he was born with a fungus.? The toenails at that age are soft to begin with. Is there a high calcium level? Don't stop until you get an answer.
