I was a week overdue so my doc scheduled me an appointment. When I went in I wasn't dilated but a centimeter and the way my cervix felt, well, I was a long way away for having this baby. The put a pill up into me to help dilate and efface. They did that twice. Then they put me on the Pitocin. It wasn't bad at first. The whole point of the "Pit" is to get your uterus contracting hard and after a while those contractions were pretty rough. They gave me this stuff called Nubane (spelling?) and it took the edge off but then I got sick when it started to wear off. Then I finally gave in to the Epidural, I will tell you now...I wish I had gotten that epidural when they asked me about it the first time. ( Oh, and my water broke by itself just before the guy came in to give me the epidural.) It was such a relief and it wore off just in time for me to feel when I needed to push. The pushing part was a piece of cake. For me the labor was more than 24 hrs. . For you it could be 10 or even 5 or even less. Your nurses and doctor will be there for you every step of the way and they will coach you through everything if you need it. I didn't have the "luxury" of hearing anyones' horror stories and to be honest, if I had it to do again, I would do it the exact same way, well, with the epidural a little earlier. :P Just go in and have your own experience.Good luck and Congratulations!

I was induced. My contractions went from barely even feeling them to extremely strong 2-3 minutes long, 2 or 3 contractions in a row, with about a 30 second break after every 2 or 3. I got the medication thru my IV after a couple hours of horrible pain that was suppose to "take the edge off" and it just made me so drowsy and loopy...didn't do anything for the pain. So I ended up getting the epidural which worked wonders! I slept the last 2 hours of my labor thanks to that epidural. My labor was 7 hours altogether. I pushed for almost 30 minutes and my son was born. By the way, they took my epidural out a little while before I started pushing so I would still have some feeling for pushing.

Although I say that it was painful, when I think back to it....it was all sooo worth it! And I can't wait to do it again!

preeclampsia can be life threatning, I would say it would be better not to take the risk of waiting to see if it happens, Im sure you and bub will be well taken care of.

I was induced with my 2nd pregnancy on my due date. I was already 3 cm dilated. I had my warters broken had a shower and went into labour contractions a few minutes apart, I sucked on the gas for an hour, actually maybe 2. Then i needed to push, i was in labour for 3 hours it was very easy. My daughter wasnt breathing when born but soon came around. I had a great birth but like you I have heard bad stories too. Good luck

Relax. I was induced twice, and it will be your own experience. Expect a lot of monitoring, and perhaps being stuck in the bed and bored at first. So bring a book, when they start upping the pitocin, it will be painful, use everything your learned in lamaze. If you go over the 16 hour mark, brush your teeth, and take a shower or sponge bath. Your own cleanliness will add to your comfort. If it gets to be too much don't be afraid to ask for an epidural. If they give you pain meds though it will effect the baby the first few days of life.

More than anything else though, good luck and congratulations. I hope your baby is born healthy, happy, and much loved.

I'll tell you what I didn't know until after I had my baby. I had to be induced because my baby was getting too big and I had and IV of pitocin. It's the contractions which are so different than "regular ones". When you are in normal labour, your contractions come on in waves - they build up, and you can work through them. With being induced, they just slam at you and are way more painful. Trust your doctors to deal with pain management, though. For me, even though I spent the day in labour, I ended up having to get a c-section anyway because my son was in distress. All ended happily, though.
Good luck, and trust your doctors!

It's not as bad as everyone makes it sound. I was induced and scared out of my mind because, just like you I heard how bad it was. I got to the hospital, went into my room. The doctor used a tool to break my water (looked like a ice pick) I'm not going to lie, it hurt like hell! After that it was fine. I was dilated to 5cm when I asked for my epidural. That was also painful but, nothing like the contractions I was having. I was dilated to 9cm but, couldn't go any further. After 12 hours of labor they decided to take me C-section because my son started to go into distress. I delivered a healthy baby boy.

Don't let anyone scare you. It is different for every woman. Just remember the reward you get after all that hard work. It's worth it!!

Good Luck and Congratulations!!!!!

In my experience, pitocin (I think I spelled it right) is a drug to induce labor and for me, it made my contractions VERY INTENSE!!!! Ask your doctor how quickly they will give you the epidural (if you are having one). I ran into a situation where they would only give it when I was dilated to a certain point and I ended up suffering for a long time. Once they gave me the epidural, I had her out in an hour. Final thought, ask dr if they will give the epidural when you want it. Good Luck!!!

I've had my labor induced once. It made the labor pains more intense. And, they 'broke my water' (the bag the baby is in) which really intensified the pain (for me, that is). I think all women and pregnancies are different. Just be prepared to ask for medication if needed as it can be very painful for some women.

Don't worry about it. I had two children and had to be induced both times. I didn't have any problems what so ever and both of my children are health and happy. Here is a website that you can check out about inductions. Good luck!
