We're one month in and overwhelmed to learn it may cost us $2000 in doctor's visits and another $5-7000 for the hospital stay. That's without complications.

most states offer medicade to women who dont have insurance and become pregnant. they will help you with medical bills (now and for the kid) and food (wic and food stamps) Just go to your local human resource office and ask for an application.

If you are in tune with your body, and ready to learn stuff, you can just hire a midwife and give birth at home. Midwifes are cheaper (I'd go with a Nurse-Midwife though, they have A LOT more training). It wasn't until last century that people gave birth in hospitals and stuff. If Tricare (my husband is military), I wouldn't mind just giving birth at home with a midwife, but unfortunately, I don't think they cover it.

Childbirth may seem painful, but it really isn't. When it gets to that point where it hurts a lot, then your body numbs itself. If there's complications, you can still go to the hospital.

But if it seems too scary, just try signing up for Medicaid, visitng hospitals and seeing about pymt plans, and go with a doctor too, to see how much it would be w/o insurance.

Ask your doctor for financial suggestions. You could hire a doula or midwife to help you out instead of the doctor visits.

what about your local health department? that shouldn't cost you anything. also get started as soon as you can on prenatal vitamins....you can get those at walmart or any drug store but should start taking those soon. prenatal care is important though so check with the health department and they should be able to help you. good luck to you!
