On Happy Days, there was an episode where they had Fonzi water-ski and jump over a shark. After that, the show went downhill. So the phrase "jumping the shark" means the series is starting to go down.

Back in the distant past when there was a show on called "Happy Days", and it came time for the show to be over after many good years: there was an episode that had Fonzie on water skiis and he was in some brief danger of this shark but he jumped over it. It was SO LAME. Now when somebody says the show is "Jumping the shark" it means they are on their way OUT.

Oh, I know, I know. The show Happy Days had a lot of success. After several years, popularity was waning and they were looking for ideas to keep the public interested. They had Fonzy jump a shark on his motorcycle. It was too weird and the show quickly went downhill. Now when a show does something weird to get ratings, they say they are "jumping the shark:.

It marks a point where a show or celebrity becomes stupid or irrelevant. Fonzie actually jumped a shark on the TV show "Happy Days, the ratings plummeted after that show for some reason, ending the series.

Fonzee. (The Fonz)
In the episode, late in the series of Happy Days, the Fonz was at the beach and a shark was in the water. He was SO cool, he jumped the shark with the surfboard and safely got away.
People said from then on, that Happy Days went down hill.
It refers to the moment your decline begins.

It has something to do with messing up the show (usually by replacing cast members) i think.
