Yes, it is true. The question is, what will it make you? Will you remake yourself as a better person, or at least like you were before, or will you stay ruined and destroyed?
Example:
Say that an average boy goes off to war. He's a nice lad, has strong morals, courteous, respectful, and by all standards is a decent human being. But let's say he kills someone. Now, I can't say what killing someone is like, I've never had that experience, but guessing from the way the people I know who have describe it, it's pretty breaking, at psychologically and emotionally speaking. So now, let's say this soldier is broken, he is utterly destroyed knowing that he ended the life of another human. Will he every "fix" himself again? Maybe, but then again he may just turn into a drunk and end up dead on the side of the road looking for a hitch-hike to the next bar.
In either case, what broke him was also what made him.
(Yep, I chose an extreme example of "breaking" and "making" because it gets the point across so well!)

Personally the thing that 'broke' me was the end to my last relationship. 2 years. And I have a beautiful son out of it. It 'broke' me b/c Im forced to deal with my own judgements/mistakes and left to wonder how I got to be a single mom at 23.
On the other hand, b/c of the experience it has 'made' me into a much stronger woman and a woman that knows that I dont need anyone to take care of me or my son, spoil him with love, have an apt, decorate my apt, etc...
I'd say yes, the one thing up to this point that I really feel has BROKEN me down has only MADE me into someone that I never thought I could ever be!

No. It is the thing that was designed to break you. Or the thing you could have allowed to break you but, you went another way. You can't be broken and made at the same time. That would be like passing and failing.

Not necessarily. It depends on what you do with the thing that breaks you. Either you will rise up, put the pieces back together and become a better and stronger person or you may also choose to fall and remain broken.

The thing the breaks you is what causes full blown depression and lack of self esteem.
Be challenged but never break.

No if you allow the thing to break you then it won't make you. You make it if you bend and don't break
