Right now I have a well established tank with plastic plants. I'd like to make it a planted aquarium, but I think I'll need to take out the current gravel and put down a layer of Flourite in order for plants to do well. Also, I have an undergravel filter (in addition to an external filter) which should probably go as I've read that it upsets the CO2.

What should I do with my fish while I'm making these changes? Are they alright just staying in the tank or should I bag them and do something else with them? Thanks for your help!

Depending how many fish you have and their sizes, I would buy an appropriate size plastic tote, clean it with salt and water then fill it with enough distilled water (whatever kind is safe for fish) for the amount of fish you have and let them have fun swimming around while you redo their 'home'.

I use a 5 gallon bucket that has never been used with or around chemicals. Fill the bucket with water from your tank and place the fish in the bucket, this way you can add an air line or heater if needed and take your time in re-arranging your tank. While your at it you could clean the tank and kill two tasks in one. Also it is a good thing that you are taking out the under gravel filter. Happy fish live longer. What? haven't you ever seen a fish smile. Watch closely. :0)

i wouldn't bag my fish, you can put them into a different tank but make sure to use the water from the old tank.(very important) i don't know how big your tank is i have a 55gallon salt and a 45 gallon fresh. i just started putting plants in mine. i would start by getting rid of the underground filter, use a whisper, penguin etc filter that hangs on the back. i didn't move my fish i planted bulbs that you put into the rocks and they come up in 30 days or so i have been successfully i usually get 4 out of five that come up.and then i take a fake plant out when a live one comes up.i don't know about the fluorite i just bought plant food dissolving tablets that go into the gravel by your plants depending size of tank.and yes plants do make a tank more challenging, but they do make dissolving tablets most for when changing the water i do that instead of the liquid clarify er. but if the tank gets wacky i just drop one in it seems to neutralize the tank.please do not listen to the person who told you to put them in fresh tap that will shock the fish.

Get a nice strong, clear plastic bag and fill it with the tank water and put the fish INTO it, and tie it off with an air line going into it. (air pump on, of course).
Put the bag into the corner of the aquarium and pump out the rest of the water, change the substrate, plant the plants, and then fill it again with water more or less the same temperature. Leave it for several hours to acclimatize any differential in temperature, then untie the bag, push it over, and let the fish into the new environment.

If you remove the UGF you have to remove the fish, deadly gases will come up and kill your fish. If you have a spare tank just set it up with water from their tank until you are finished. If you don't a bucket that has never been used to hold any type of soap is fine. If you think it may take you a while then adding an airstone would be a good idea.

Take the fish and water from your fish tank and keep them in another tank with airstones. Every day just change a little of the water in that tank. Give the renovated tank about a day or two before letting the fish back in.

Leave them in there, I used to pot my plants in small terracotta pots with 2/3 potting mix and 1/3 gravel on the top. just make sure you have enough gravel on the bottom to hide the pots
