Yes, I do see flags in most pools on both ends.

what you do is start at the flags and start counting how many strokes it takes to get to the wall and remember the number the next time you swim

Until your confident with counting your strokes until you reach the wall, as they may change when you go faster, you can look back slightly and quickly when you feel that you are getting near the end or want to see how far you ar from the wall. Don't slow down or stop though, just keep swimming normally as you look back.

That's what the flags are for. Depending on your stroke, once you pass the flags you time your flip off the wall.

if you're turning, get your stroke count from the flags to the wall and do one less than it takes you to get there and turn over and do a flip turn

if you're finishing the race, do the same thing but dont turn over or do a filp turn
