It would depend on where a person lived. In the US then yes; in a position where they need to be understood by others on a day to day basis. However here in the cold white north often speaking another language (other than English) no matter how badly the English is spoken is a plus because companies have clients that only speak languages other than English.

edit: I competely agree with you. As a person that cannot learn other languages easily in a country where often being not only bilingual but multilingual I feel your pain. Maybe you should come work in Canada and I can go work there eh?

An employer should show a legitimate, nondiscriminatory reason for denying an employment opportunity because of an individual's accent or manner of speaking. Whether the denial is letitimate should depend on the qualifications of the person, the nature of the position, and whether the employee's accent or manner of speaking harmed, or would harm, job performance. Requiring employees or applicants to be fluent in English may be discriminatory and excludes individuals of a particular national origin and is not related to job performance.

A bad workman quarrels with his tools. My grip over English is not good at all but still I have a very good job only because of my good qualification. People like you can't do anything for country and are always ready to degrade its reputation. Shame on you!
Some times though it depends on the nature of job you want. If you had done MBA or want to work in call centre then you really needs to be fluent in English otherwise in Government jobs it isn't must at all.

In a multilingual country like India, especially when most of reasonably decent firms are doing international business, So it is essential that you have decent communication skills in English. This will not apply if you are working any job related to your district or you are working in field no communication with out side world is required.

I believe it stems from fear of having to examine your beliefs and challenge them. With those beliefs you also have to examine people who have opposite beliefs and begin to break down those stereotypes you once believed about people or groups of people. When I first came to this site, while I don't remember my first question I was thrilled to see people who were non-believers. In my small town that's not something you see a lot. I was also cautious of Christians as for most of my life whenever I dared to mention eve this slightest doubt I was pounded with questions and threats of hell or whatever. I am happy to say that being here for 3 years has drastically changed all that and ironically I have come to a point where I don't even care what religion a person is. There are just people here to me. There are many people I enjoy and I don't even know what their beliefs are. Many are contacts and after I learned they were Christian I am thrilled to know that despite my silly questions and my inquisitive nature they still accept me.

OF COURSE NOT....BUT AS YOU SAY YOU ARE FROM INDIA WHICH HAS CULTURAL DIVERSITIES AND AT LEAST 15 OFFICIAL DIFFERENT LANGUAGES... IN SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES ENGLISH HAS EMERGED AS A HANDY LANGUAGE BETWEEN PEOPLE WHO SPEAK DIFFERENT NATIVE LANGUAGES...IN FACT THIS IS THE CASE ALL AROUND THE WORLD...SO TRY TO GET BETTER GRASP OF ENGLISH..EVEN IF YOU FEEL DISGUSTING ABOUT THE ENTIRE SCENARIO...

No way. A big emphatic NO. The qualification, the ability, the comprehension of a person can be judged only by the fact of what he does for his community.

When you speak, do not translate your language in your mind to English. You will stutter. You will be lost for words.

Read, read, read. That's the only way. See how an author brings out an idea beautifully, his/her diction, her sentence formation.... digest them as you read and enjoy every sentence. Read the paragraph over and over again and understand the deep meaning.........Marvel at it. You will be surprised, how over time, your vocabulary increases and correct grammer, spelling and sentence formation just flows.

Don't read trash. Read good, best selling fiction or non-fiction. It costs money of course - or borrow from the library.......That is an investment in yourself.
