Two years in a row, school started, there was a notice of an outbreak of head lice and within a week of the notice, my 8 year old girl got head lice.

I've asked her not to share toys, or lunch with other kids, and I can't understand how she got it twice. She is pretty adamant that she did not share.

Any thoughts how she got it? Is it really that contagious?

lice jump from anyone to anything.. just being close to a person without actual physical contact can cause you to get lice.... if this is such a big issue in the school everyone would have to be treated at the same time and then retreated again in a a week or so to kill any of the remaining nats.... it really is a horrible thing to deal with..

Having had 3 little girls who went through lice episode (from school) THREE times I will first share the absolute best way to get rid of lice that I surprisingly never read about or hear about yet it is better than ANY product made for lice - HAIR GEL! Just regular, thick goopy, hair styling gel, NOT mouse, actual gel that makes hair stand straight up and look greasy. What it does is cut off all air supply to the lice and eggs. This kills them all in less than 12 hours. Simply cover all of scalp and hair with gel before bed. Use shower cap if too goopy. Then wash off in morning. It worked 100% every time for all 3 girls. Of course would also wash all the bedding, hairbrushes, and hats in all hot water. The best policy for ANYTHING is honesty. Just be honest with grandparents. Tell then she seems to be getting lice at their place so maybe they could change out sheets, pillows, and mattress she sleeps on. Maybe it is entire house, but maybe it is just one pillow, or maybe granpa has lice and doesn't even know it. Being open and honest (while also sweet and respectful) you may just improve the health of them too.

If there is a sand box or playground with sand, it is possible she got it that way. Those little critters can actually jump, so it is not unusual for her to get this again. I had four kids and they all got it at the same time. I had to shampoo their heads with the lice shampoo and clean toilets constantly as well as changing bed linens. I finally had to cut my beautiful daughter's long hair. I feel for you. Yes, head live are very, very contagious. You need to use some of the shampoo on yourself to keep you from getting it.

She could have gotten a little too close to a person with lice and made close enough contact for the lice to jump. She could have put a piece of her clothing down like a jacket, maybe even her back pack down right next to theirs. They jump all over the place so, there's no real way to tell.

I thought I might offer you the following web page as a good authority on much to do with head lice and children. It will give you a lot of information on all aspects of it:

I had the same thing with my daughter. She did not share any toys or lunch with any kids. But remember - she is eight. They will follow your instructions exactly. My daughter did not view the comb she shared with a "less than daily bather" friend as either toys or food. Good luck and make sure you wash everything you can. Get that crap out of everything!

Head lice are VERY contagious! After you get rid of them,if you will start putting about three drops of tea tree oil in your hand with shampoo, they will stay off her head.

you can go to your doctor and get an antibotic and it will kill them.Wash all her bed sheets and pillow case vacum everything ,buy a new hair brush and vacume the car seats.Use lots of conditioner to smother the eggs and they will slide out better .Use your finger nails under a bright light to remove the eggs ,one egg can hatch and start the whole thing over.Spending the night with friends can cause her to get lice.Or sharing lockers at school, dress up at play centers ,gym helmets or shirts .Use a profesional shampoo to keep her hair clean and conditioner.

Kids are going to share stuff and regardless, if she got if from school, it doesn't matter if she shared a toy. She could just be near the kid and get it!
