The tag on the hat is the price in 'old money', pounds shillings and pennies written l/s/d (believe it or not). 10/6 cannot be 10 pounds/6 pennies (that would be 10/0/6), it is possibly 10 pounds/6 shillings but I suspect it is 'ten-and-six'; 10 shillings/six pennies...a large sum in the mid- 1800's...""The price on the hat is definitely 10 shillings & sixpence, expressed in conversation as "Ten & Six". Ten shillings was half of one pound. There were 240 pence (d) in a pound, so sixpence was half a shilling. The currency was happily decimalised in, I think, 1971 so that a pound had 100 pence in it and the sixpence coin disappeared, though the shilling coin did duty for several years as 5 new pence."

The fact that it is a price tag (and not a size tag) has been confirmed by Disney.

people used to think it was 10/6 because of Mad Hatter Day being the "second silly day" of the year (the first being April Fool's Day) and is celebrated on 10/6 (October 6 in the United States; June 10 in Britain).

There's one thing I can't stress enough: don't try to match decorations, props, plates or cups. The whole charm of the mad hatter lies in his offbeat, eccentric style, so the more you try to coordinate the environment, the less you'll be evoking his character. Like many other people have said, set up a long table in the garden. Cover it using two or three different textured and coloured tablecloths. As for chairs, make them as mismatched as possible. This will also give the atmosphere a vintage feel, which is closer to the 'classic' Alice that your friend loves. Start going to thrift shops to buy plates and teacups. If they don't come in a set they won't be expensive at all. Use old different shaped jars as vases and decorate the table with flowers to give it a girly feel. Fill numerous teapots of all shapes and sizes with different cocktail mixes or non-alcoholic drinks. If you're planning an evening party, use heaps of different sized candles instead of lights. As for food, brightly coloured cupcakes and finger sandwiches will work perfectly. Use food colouring to make the food look as crazy as the environment. It sounds like an awesome theme, I hope these tips help!
