It depends on what the story is supposed to be about. I like to take a picture and make up a story about it. If you have time and the teacher is letting you write about whatever you want, you might try looking at The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, by Chris Van Allsburg -- this is a book of weird illustrations that are great for getting your creative juices flowing.

Another way to do a short story: think of a movie you saw. Now write a sequel or an alternative ending.

If you post more information about what the requirements are, I bet we can help you better! I'm an English teacher, so I'm happy to help :-)

550 words should be a breeze for you! You aren't wanting us to actually write it for you, are you? Hope not! That would be cheating! But I'm sure you can handle it. You need some kind of topic. Probably something that interests you personally or you have done personally is the best. Think about a fun time you had as a kid, maybe when you did something with a grandparent or on a trip. Something that kind of taught you something about yourself. Write your basic thoughts out on the computer, disregarding all the grammer stuff and order of things. Then edit it, and have a friend or family member read it to make sure it all makes sense and is done well.

Just pick a topic that would be easily researched on the net. That would save you a trip to the library. Some suggestions would be: Native Americans (The Trail of Tears) The Alamo. Anything pertaining to historical events.

1. Go to www.deviantart.com,surf until you find a picture you like/gives you inspiration and let your brain/creativity/stupidity lead the way

2. Write about someone with a tragic past and dies tragically(teachers LOVE this type. I know cos' I always get an A1 for english when I write about stuff like that)

3. Write a cool ghost story(if you can only make it lame, funny or boring, forget this idea)

Give us what you have (and the guideline you must follow) and we can give you ideas or directions on where you can take your characters. That way, you can experience what its like to write and get possitive criticism while at the same time fulfilling your requirements.
