I have been straight all my life, and I have had a difficult family life, well, let's just say my parents weren't June and Ward Clever, and I've never really felt loved or accepted. In the past few months, I have grown to love a woman, and I am attracted to her, and would do anything for her. She and I have a lot in common, but she is very straight. How do I know I don't just love her as a friend or because I'm finally learning to love myself-- and she's my hero, my role model and guide?

I don't know what you are but it sounds like you could use a real friend and you seemed to have found that in her. It's good to have a friend "that gets you" so cherish that . Only you can decide your sexuality. I know this might seem weird but get the book THE COLOR PURPLE ( not the movie) the main character had a very harsh upbringing and life and then meets Sug Avery (a women) they do become lovers but Ceelie isnt a lebsbian persay she needed to be loved and cherished... and found that with a woman. Anyhow , I wish you well on your path to loving yourself.

this sounds rather complicated. Does she feel the same towards you. Are you actually together or just friends? If you are together and it feels right in every way then you could be gay or even bi. If your not together then you could still be gay or you have just finally found a really good friend. I hope this helps but i don't know what else to say. Perhaps you simple idolize her?!?

Do you find any other women attractive? Do you think about this women sexually? Could you be intimate with her? I think that you fall in love with the person, not the sex. So if you feel you are in love with her, dont try to label it. You could very easily fall in love with a man after this, you really just never know.

if she's your hero, role model and guide, you should not give up yourself for another woman...or you'll lose your own position in life...R U sure she's straight?
watch out - for you know as much as I do that love makes blind. we always have to keep our eyes open

Sounds like you are learning to love yourself, and its alright to love another regardless of their sex. There are many forms of love, and it is easy to confuse them.
If you were bi or gay you would have desires for other women as well as her.
I wish I could be more helpful, good luck

Not all loving relationships have a sexual aspect to them.
Look at Oprah and her friend Gale.
I'm glad you are learning to love yourself. Bravo!

Can you picture yourself kissing her, or making love with her? If you do, chances are you're indeed a lesbian. Good luck!
