connected the country from coast to coast. travel, shipping, mail, all made faster. travel leads to hotels, restuarants, etc... so people can move about the country. connected us as a people,

This was the period called reconstruction, rebuilding after the Civil War. Railroads enabled goods to be transported more quickly, thus speeding the rebuilding of our country. Lumber and tools could be shipped much more quickly. Also, railroads allowed people to travel across the country in record time, furthering the social development of the USA.
