It is very difficult to calculate the number of supporters. However, a number of football fans are not die-hard supporters. They probably support the popular teams due to their marketing exploits. If you look at Arsenal, they have proven (statistically) to be the most consistent team in England. They play fluid football. Entertaining and smooth. Barcelona is the equivalent team in Spain.
