As soon as I feel one beginning to form, when it first feels slick, itchy and a little odd, I start soaking it with Blistek. For me this will usually make it short and usually never breaks out into a sore. I would imagine different people will react differently from cold sores and also the remedies. Some people use just plain camphor. Good Luck. Pops

I'm not sure about a "home" remedy, as in something you can find at home. A great natural remedy that you can find in most speciality vitamin shops is the amino acid Lysine (best taken in free-form). You can also get lip balms that contain lysine. Another option is a blend of essential oils specifically for cold sores. Check your local health food store.

I can tell a few days before a cold sore breaks my skin. I found that I get a tingling in one or both of my ears, and/or an incessant itch in the back-roof of my mouth. If i jump on it and take some L-Lysine (vitamin/supplement isle) the cold sore doesn't break to surface on my lip. My mother told me to try it & with some trial & error (took me years to get the dosage and timing down) it's now a routine.
The proof that it works for me is that when I don't jump on it; I get the nasty blossom(s).

you can cure the cold sore virus (a similar strain to the herpes virus!). although you may put salt on the cold sore, that would only temporarily relieve it and make it go away. however, the virus will always be prevalent.
or what i do is just bite on it and it hurts like no other but it works! or maybe i'm just weird. =X

Tea tree oil, ice
Toothpaste (!) will also help dry it up faster. Try that if you don't have to go out in public, it actually works.
Take L-Lysine (amino acid) supplements, increase intake of foods containing L-Lysine (eg. tuna), reduce intake of foods containing Arginine (eg. chocolate). From wikipedia: "This supplement (L-Lysine) can be used to reduce occurrences, as well as decrease the severity and healing time of herpes (this is done by increasing Lysine and reducing Arginine (which has been shown to increase outbreaks of Herpes Simplex))."

If you take L-Lysine every day you will not get them. If you catch them early you can dry them up with alcohol. work at keeping it dry. blot your lips. don't wipe or lick.
