Goestoff Eiffel designed the infrastructure of the statue same idea as his tower, I climbed the stairs which were spiral with resting seats along the way I stopped about three Fourths of the way up and just sat their in amazement of the structure supporting all this copper sheating, while everyone was rushing to the crown for the beautiful view.
Perhaps if you may on your next question "Why was such a magnificent gift given,, was it for past, present or future "Thank-You's""

A gift from France. Sometime in the 19th century. They held a big fund-raiser for it.

We threatened France with Nuclear annihilation unless they paid proper tribute to our awesomeness. Their answer translated, (roughly) meant "try it you stinking, cowboy hat wearing toothless bastages" so we sent a battalion of marines in, stole the Louvre and the Statue of Liberty and ta-dah!
