You don't! 13 year olds will respect you more if you let them be who they are. Make sure you know where they are going, who they are going with, what they will be doing, and when the will be back- but let there hair be. They have so many insecurities in their life they don't need another.

Pffft, hair, clothes, even swearing are not the stuff worth battling. Hair and clothes are your kids own personal expression and he needs to be able to express his personality. Compromise - no gang or obscene clothes and he can decide on most else. Hair... so what, it's the style he wants and it's probably because it helps him fit in with his peers - which is a big deal and something you should want for him, too. Swearing... well not in the house but if he slips, don't make a big deal about it. The rule should be no swearing AT family, but ha, remember you all have to follow that rule, too. Let go of the little stuff and pick your battles for the important stuff of parenting instead... drugs, violence, flunking out of school, gangs, knocking someone up, etc. Good luck.

is having his hair in his face really the worst thing that could happen? i think you should choose your battles and i don't think this is one of the big ones. provided he is a pretty good and respectful kid in other aspects, leave his hair alone. teen years are a tough time, maybe he is trying to hide a facial 'flaw' such as a nose he doesn't like or acne. as long as he keeps it clean the long shaggy hair is 'in' right now. let him be.

Lots of guys wear bandannas and baseball caps to keep hair out of their eyes.
Get him some no metal hair elastics once it's long enough to tie back.

his??? boys should look respectful and not have hair long enough to be in their face unless they are responsable enough to take care of it. So get it cut if he can't take care of it.

One of the lessons I learned in parenting classes is to choose your battles.
I figured it's his hair, it's on his head, it's up to him what he wants to do with it.
My answer -- here's one less thing you have to worry about.
