No, not unless you can convince the search engine to turn over their records. All search engines keep a record of who search what. They identify users based on the cookie they leave behind in your browser. Only in the rarest cases have the search engines released such information. For example, earlier this year the federal government requested such information from Yahoo!, MSN, AOL and Google. The information supposedly was used to support COPA ( children online protection act). However, a month ago, AOL (American On Line) released search data on 650,000 AOL users and people were very upset.

Sorry to tell you this, but you cannot find out unless you have a legal request forcing all the search engines to release their logs to you.

Then there's the messy act of figuring out the names that correspond to each IP address... so it's extremely messy (if not impossible) to find out.

No. To do that, you'd have to have access to the logs of all the searches made on all the search engines in all the world, ever.. :-)

It's easier just to wait for them to get in touch

Actually I have a few that I really do consider real life friends. Unfortunately none of them are within walking distance though.
