if the laptop is new,,is it still under warranty? if so call dell and have them walk u through it step by step.....if not...u have a few options.....did the pc come with any disc?..if so ,go through them...it will probally say something like utility and drivers...if u see that install it and follow the steps and sound should work.....
if still no sound...i would go to start..type in...dxdiag...u will see a new window....at the top..click the sound tab...u will see device and driver info.....u should be able to go to the dell website...maybe hp.com (search drivers) website if it is a compatible driveror u can go to the original website like soundblater or realtec and download the driver fro m there....if u do not see nothing listed under sound..if it is blank..then most likely the sound card itsself has been loosened up and not got a full connection..or it does not have a sound card with it....im not exactly how to do remote assistance....i could help u on messenger though if u would like

if it's a new dell laptop, the hardware and software should be built in. Check to make sure the volume is turned up and check the sound properties and make sure the mute button is NOT checked. If all looks good, it could be something Dell forgot to do. Call tech support.

being the computer is new as you say, take it back to where you purchased it and have them fix it or call Dell tech support (the number should be with the papers that came with the computer) and have them troubleshoot. You have at least a 1 yr. free service on a new computer.
