Is it possible to have an ovarian syst and still get a positive pt result. I was in the ER 2 weeks ago having sharp side pains and found out it was an ovarian syst. they did a blood test and said I was not pregnant. I just took a pt and it came out positive and I have not had sex for 3-4 weeks now. is it possible the syst would throw off the test or am I really pregnant?

You could have an ovarian cyst and be pregnant at the same time. (It happened to a friend of mine.) I suggest you see your doctor for a pregnancy test, which would be more accurate than an OTC test.

Don't know if the cyst would throw off the test, but it's both possible and common to have ovarian cysts with pregnancy. Warning, I'm gonna get technical here...

When you ovulate, the part of the ovary that releases the egg is called the "corpus luteum". If you don't get pregnant with that cycle, it just gets reabsorbed over the next couple of days. But if you do get pregnant, the hormones in your system can make it develope into something called a "luteal cyst". It's not dangerous to you or a developing fetus. It will go away on it's own when you're not pregnant any more. Meanwhile, if it's large enough to cause you problems, it can be removed.

Most women will get a functioning cysts at the beginning of their pregnancy. This will support the fetus until the placenta takes over around 12 weeks. Most doctors will not do anything unless the cysts gets over 6-8 cm, causes extreme pain. A doctor may recommend removing it if it stands a chance of twisting or rupturing. Most Doctor's will just monitor it. I am pregnant now and had this same problem. My cysts reached 14 cm and at 12 weeks my doctor did surgery and removed it. (The baby is fine) The surgery was not fun and it took about 6 weeks to recover from the surgery. I do not recommend the surgery as you'll be awake for it. The recovery is a lot like a c-section recovery. With that being said, you're doctor will not do anything, if he/she does anything at all until after 12 weeks. More than likely, it is just a functioning cysts. WebMD is the best source of medical info on the net, if you want to check it out.

sounds to me that it was too early for anything to show. the baby was so small at that point that it would've shown up as a dot and only an obgyn who was lookin for it would see it. as far as that cyst it sounds to me like your body is doing what it is supposed to. i got a cyst and that was how i knew for sure i was pregnant. it was the ultrasound that showed the pregnancy. the doctor told me that the sac (the thing that feeds the baby in the first trimester before the placenta comes along) wasn't strong enough to supply the fetus with the needed horomones, therefore the cyst was there filling in the gap. once the sac was gone and the placenta was there, at about the 4th month an ultrasound was done and the cyst was gone. the cyst got pretty huge and i was in pain...first on the side then right in the center of my uterus down by the bladder. i took ibuprofen and slept a lot. now i have a healthy 9 month old girl! good luck!!!
