A virus is a piece of malicious software (malware) which is designed to cause damage to your computer system in some way.

The next step up are Worms, which are viruses that like to replicate & spread to others.

If you think of computer viruses like diseases for humans (like the common cold or AIDS), then you can really understand how nasty they can be.

It is code that affects a system by causing eratic or incorrect actions in the computer.

Linux ( Microsoft.com, hotmail.com, msn.com, all of Redmond campus run on over 45,000 Linux computers, so are immune), BSD (Mac and Yahoo.com among others, all run it!), have no virus.

If someone were able to write an automatic malicious program for the MAC or BSD, or Linux, he would be infamous! Needless to say hundreds or thousands, have already tried, and failed!

It's a vicious software program designed either to drive you crazy or triggered because you went to a site and didn't buy anything. It damages your computer because it lets loose with adware, spyware, a variety of viruses including trojan horses. Things will keep popping up and you can't use your computer normally. It will place itself in your start up and usually if you try to delete them, they come right back. It slows up your machine tremendously. So it's important that you are careful about the sites you go to and what you click on.
That happened to me and I couldn't get rid of all of them and had to erase my C drive and reinstall the entire C drive from scratch.
