Look in the phone book, but the best bet is to contact a Realtor. They know who is reputable and who's not. There are lots of things and inspector does, inspects: plumbing, electrical, appliances, roof, paint, windows, insect problems, wood rot, foundation, makes sure things are up to code such as water heaters, GFI's, gas lines, HVAC. It may cost a couple of hundred bucks, but worth the loss on your part if they find out the house has termites, hail damage, plumbing problems, all of which you might not find until later down the road when it's too late. I do repair work on forclosed homes for Realtors and have seen people get screwed because they didn't want to spend a few extra bucks for an inspection, they in turn go back to the Realtor and complain about problems, and there's nothing they can do but say you should have got an inspection done. Trust me on this, get an inspection, by a licensed inspector who will provide a legal written report, not just some guy who says he can do it for you.

call the local chamber of commerce or get in touch with your local auditor (city hall or the court house can help you find either of them). the auditor is most likely the one who will be able to help you. they are pretty informative and you should be able to find them on the web in your local gov site.
