Well, the letter y represents the y-axis and the letter x the x-axis applies only in the xy-plane. Did you know that the letters x and y do not always represent the two mentioned axes. For example, the (x,y) coordinates do not apply as axes in the complex plane. You will see the complex plane later on. There is also an (x,y,z) plane in advanved algebra.
I found a link that may answer your question in more detail.

objective issues exist. a million+a million=2. no rely your theory, this assertion remains genuine. Socially, there's a probable limitless sort of critiques and perspectives on each little thing. some people do not in basic terms like the thought a million+a million=2 and think of we ought to consistently all in basic terms settle for whilst sons and daughters answer math questions incorrect (by way of fact that's precise of their eyes). this would not replace fact, it in basic terms varieties society. So, each little thing isn't a theory, yet each little thing is concern to it.

Thanks for axing. Um, asking. It's arbitrary. Perhaps x, y, z were selected because there are three space dimensions, and those are the last three letters of the alphabet. But a, b, c are just as good.

X, Y, and Z are more commonly used in math because they are not used much in words.

um my chemistry teacher said that you could remember independent and dependent with them because x has two legs it could stand by itself so it was independent and since y only has one leg it needs help standing so it was dependent... my chem teacher is weird lol
