Basically what happened was the girl started believing in hoodoo. Hoodoo only works if you believe. She found the records and stuff and thought she understood how it all worked. She thought papa justify and mama celie were using people as sacrifices in order to stay alive when in the end that turned out not to be true. When the girl stood after getting hit with the mirror her soul was in the body of the old woman and celies soul (which was in the old womans body)was in hers. She said something like "It's not so much a sacrifice...its more like a trade." They werent killing anyone, they were switching their souls and living out the years the people had left. The shock from having their souls switched put the girl and the old man Ben (who's body was that of the young lawyers) were in such shock that they couldnt speak and the way they were made it seem like they'd had strokes. It's a great ending once you understand it and put all the pieces together. Dont feel bad, it took me a couple times watching it to get it too :)

They can't do the ritual unless she believes in hoodoo and the minute she demonstrated that she believed they switched her soul out with the old lady just like they have done time and time again every since they were Justify and his wife. They give the person a drug to keep them from telling anyone what has happened.
