Which means the children will be able to go home for lunch.

I would never let my child walk home from school for lunch. Too many weirdo's out there. I can't believe an elementary school would suggest this. We only lived 2 blocks from the school when my daughter was in kindergarten and the bus still picked her up.

It sounds great, doesn't it? Lots of little kids skipping home for lunch with their mummy, just like in the old days.

Yet it's NOT the old days, is it? Children get dropped off by car or bus to go to school and picked up by car or bus to go home. Some might walk or cycle, but more children these days do not. Parents are scared these days to let their kids to walk and cycle to school and back.

How are the few kids on such a lunch programme going to get home? Are they going to be accompanied by an adult? Will they be in a group of no less than three kids? Are children under age 10 going to be allowed to walk alone?

Doesn't sound like a good idea to me, unless the children involved are collected and dropped back off by their parent/guardian. But perhaps there will be strigent regulations and kids won't just be able to up and decide, "Oh, I'm a bit peckish today, I think I'll go home for lunch today. Hm....I wonder if they left the house unlocked for me, just in case, before they went to work."

In Australian and NZ schools, all students must be signed out if they are leaving during the day. Kids don't usually go home for lunch, even if their house is next to the school! I expect it's the same in US schools these days, but perhaps I'm wrong....?

No. Who would watch the kids during that time? All the local companies couldn't close at lunch time so that all the parents could go home and monitor their children.
