This is a matter of animal instinct. No matter where the Salmon come from - they are always able to find the river where they were born. I believe it is a matter of knowledge being spread through genetics. It is a fair bet that their parents and their parent's parents were born in that same river.

In order to move up stream, the salmon jump up waterfalls and upstream in order to reach the breeding grounds. The females drop their eggs - and the male fertilize them. Then the tragedy begins - most of the Salmon die after they do their reproductive duties.

But on a lighter note, there is a pretty good chance that most of the new generation will survive the trip back down the river.

Ok Salmons has senses that enables them to locate where they go. Salmons go to fresh water to spawn usually in the exact same spot where they were born. To spawn the female salmon lays the eggs and at the same time the male squrts it sperm so they are mixing while they settle to the ground

Humans are still uncertain how animal instincts work, only that they do. For that matter no scientist can explain exactly how a radio works either, go figure.
