What is Weber and bureaucracy?

Weber is probably a reference to the German social philosopher, Max Weber. He is credited with being one of the founders of sociology. His master work, "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism," is still controversial. However, in the text, he showed how a change in one institution (religion) can bring about change in another institution (the economy).

Bureaucracy is routinized, orderly proceedure for accomplishing some task. In the 1800's, it was a new methodology. Weber thought that bureaucracy was the wave of the future.

Today, after more than a century of bureaucratic blunders, we tend to view the set of procedures, the internal hierarchy, and the often-confusing rules as red tape.

However, without bureaucracy, the economically advanced countries of the world would not have advanced to a post-industrial society.
