Al Azhar is the best!
1. It's the oldest in the world (founded in 971A.D.)
2. It's got amazing architechture
3. It's highly renown and respected throughout the world
The American University is a joke! It's mostly a place for rich kids to go and pretend they are getting an education. Cairo University is not the oldest as others have mentioned since it only came into being December 21, 1908(thats 937 years after Al Azhar). It may be older than most unversities in Egypt but it certainly is not the oldest.

Gotta represent and say - AUC.
If you're coming from overseas, and you're not an Egyptian citizen, you will find it almost impossible to attend any of the Egyptian public universities. The bureaucracy is just impenetrable. A colleague of mine tried to attend Cairo University a few years ago, and he just kept getting passed around and basically blown off.
AUC has a very highly regarded journalism program, and the new director of the Middle East Studies program just arrived here from Stanford. The language curriculum is excellent - the US government sends some of its people here to continue their Arabic studies.

well, i don't understand what you mean by "best"? Best in what? i think that you already know by now that the education system nowadays isn't great, and what makes a university a good one is several things, mostly the teachers and professors and the administrative system applied.
Cairo, Ain Shams, etc. Azhar, etc.. are old universities but they lost their pioneer role they once had.
i definitely choose the AUC as the best university in Egypt.

it really depends on what u are planning to study. Auc is very good in Business and economics, for engineering it is very good but cairo or ain shams universities has stronger curriculum but the AUC concentrates more on projects and teamwork. there are now many new universities such as the french, the british, the canadian and the german. the german is building a strong name as they guarantee an intership in germany. also they are strong in sciences such engineering and CS.

It depends on what collage you want to join...
It also depends on your grades & your finantial abilities....
Cairo univ. is better & older than any other...
But for Quality education, AUC, GUC & Canadian univ. If you can afford them...
