My friends company bought out my company. He has just been fired but I retained my job. I knew he and his coworkers were going to loose their job because they were union and my shop isn't. I knew 3 days before that they were going to bust the union. I was told not to say anything or my job would be in jepardy. I have my own family to provide for but in my occupation I could get another job in a second. Am I a cad for keeping my mouth shut? or does self preservation come into play here. I quit my friends company to work at this company which is in the same business. I quit because of the manager. This manager will now be managing my shop and I don't know if I will stay here or not. There is a chance that if I quit my friend could get a job at my shop. What should I do?

Think of your family first. That is your first priority. You were told not to say anything and you honored that promise. Why would you want to say anything? He needed to hear it from his company. As far as quitting your job, don't jump the gun. Give it time. Things always work out for the best, and your friend could find a better job somewhere else without your help. It is not your job to "fix" your friends situation unless he ask for your help.

Thats' definitely an awkward situation. I don't know how much time you have, but I'd at least start looking for other jobs. Not that you have to take them, but to at least see what your options are. Maybe you'll see an opportunity that you really want to give a shot. If so, then you're answer might be an easy one. Hey, maybe even tell your friend that you're looking at other options. Maybe he'll give it a shot too and find another job, and then you don't have to worry about anything. Otherwise, I think you have to weigh the situation carefully before making your decision. What are the odds that if you tell your friend that anyone will find out? If it's just a matter of him keeping his mouth shut about it and you trust him, than I'd probably tell him. You just have to look at as many of the possible outcomes to this situation as you can, and make a decision based on the best of those outcomes.

Wasn't your job to do so. Besides, there's a reason for the phrase "killing the messenger". The bearer of bad news bears the brunt of the blame, at least to some degree. Besides, what difference, in the grand scheme of things, would them knowing a few days earlier done, especially if being the informant of what was inevitable was going to cost you your job as well.

If you aren't going to stay anyway, because of the Manager, you should recommend him for the position when you give your notice. It was not your place to tell him he would lose his job; he probably won't ever find out that you knew, before he did.
