Originaly it was just Luthor and when he went bad his dad who isnt anything like the smallvile disowned him and changed the family name to thurol an anagram of luthor and then later in the 60s i think he got lex and i think the alexander part was mention in smallville.

It depends on which version you are talking about. On the different Earths in the DC universe, there has been a Lex, an Alex, an Alexander, and Alexis. I'm not sure which name they are using for the version in the current continuity.
