Does anyone know if you can buy a 100 dollar bond (muni, corporate, etc)? If so, where can I find some information on doing this? The minimum I can find so far is 1,000 dollars and right now I cannot afford that.

You can go to your bank and ask to buy either an EE or an I savings bond.

I Bonds are guaranteed to at least keep up with inflation. The "face" value of the bond is the purchase price, so a $50 bond (the smallest denomination you can buy at the bank) costs $50.

EE Bonds are a fixed-rate bond. (Unlike the I Bond, where the rate varies.) The purchase price for an EE bond is half the face value, so a $50 bond (again, the smallest you can buy in person) is $25.

You can also buy either type of bond directly online, for any exact dollar amount you like (provided it's at least $25) at http://www.treasurydirect.gov/

Savings bonds are available at your bank. They are not as liquid as corporate or muni bonds.

You might want to try investing in a bond fund. There are bond ETFs (like mutual funds, but they trade like bonds) you can buy at an online brokerage firm. Look at SHY or AGG.
