Well, quite frankly. There are a lot of stupid people out there. This same question can be applied to why reality shows are popular.
Lets break it down (thats a rap saying, right?). The lyrics are incredibly juvenile and racist and sexist and violent. I think it was Ray Charles that said, chit, I could have done that when I was 6.
The music has a low budget moronic bass beat.
They borrow or steal lyrics and melodies from other usually better artists, without giving them credit.
Hip Hop (rap, whatever) is also very bad for kids. Hey, I am a free speech guy, but there is no law that says you have to use toilet paper either!
Over 70% of black kids are born into a single parent household. These hip hop jerks are role models for many of these children. They are taught it is necessary to commit crimes, beat women, screw as many women as you can, take and sell drugs, wield guns, etc. And hip hop is also popular in the suburbs as well.
Hip Hop is a Moron Festival! And these morons are making money, pathetic!

I totally disagree. I admit that some songs have samples of other older song but usually those are just small snippets re-worked to make an old classic new again. As for Rap being shallow and only about sex I think this is because you are listening to the wrong type of rap or you are only listening to what is on the Radio. Check out K-OS, Boogie Down Productions, Kanye West, Public Enemy, Lupe Fiasco, Q-Tip, De La Soul, and KRS1. These are just a few artists, old and new that have more to say than just shake ya booty and look at all my money. Personally some of my favorites are Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Eminem, Ice T, Jay Z and Snoop Dog, but they might not be to your liking. Try to listen to the previous set of names and I think you will be surprised.

because MTV is the trend-setter. MTV keeps playing hip-hop, more people are attracted into hip-hop. To supply the demand, local radios also play more hip-hop, and cause more and more people to listen to hip-hop.
Anyway no worries, questioner, you aren't alone. BUT well I agree that we can't judge certain genre of music. If you don't like, well, just don't listen! It's as simple as that. And just like the prev boyband trend etc, I bet this wont last forever too! :)

I don't listen to hip-hop personally, I prefer rock/alternative music of the 80s and 90s. But I think it must be a dance thing? Hip-hop music makes you want to dance.

I really enjoy hip-hop and rap. They have really good beats and they are great to dance to. I draw the line at rap songs that are discriminating towards women though.
