Why is it that in any sitcom you see on tv that shows a family, the idea of a woman having complete control over the house is fine? That they can even show how she wants to do something the husband really doesn't want to do and she can do something or give some kind of threatening look and brow beat him into doing it? Or talk about hitting him or smacking him or actually show it on screen? And not only is this accepted behavior on the show, but gets big laughs?

Now imagine a show that did all of these same things, but had a man doing it to his wife? Just how quickly would that show get cancelled? Why are these things treated as if they're acceptable behavior for women but forbidden for men?

Keep in mind, I'm not condoning the behavior for men. I think it's wrong for anyone to do these things, man or woman, but if it's going to be shown on tv, how about a little consistency instead of this double standard?

Heterosexual males are simply portrayed to be stupid, weak and insenstive in all of the media.
T.v shows , commercials, its unbelievable. I pointed it out to my two adolescent daughters, and we all look for it now. They didn't realize it , and once you do, you can't help but see it everywhere!!! If its a family situation, the father is always sort of a joke. There are few exceptions. It really belittles men and makes me sick. It gives kids watching this a twisted view of the role their fathers have. I agree with you 100 percent.

happiness and equality is very boring to watch after a couple of episodes then the rating would fall and the whole project would fail. i think more people would tune in to wife beating (not that i condone or appreciate it) than otherwise. especially if the woman really deserved a slap (not that i'd give it to her of course!)

see what i mean? It makes for more interesting reading and writing and viewing than everything being so fine and dandy that the storyline just suffocates and dies

Very true. In the past, it was the other way around. If you watch old reruns of I Love Lucy, it's almost sickening when Ricky actually turns Lucy over his knee and spanks her! She hollers like a child but seems powerless to do anything about it.

OK, so we went through the 70's and women have been liberated (mostly). But there still lingers this attitude that women have to prove they are equal to men.

Hence, the humor found in men who don't stand up to their wives. My husband hates the Dick Van Dyke Show for that reason. He was kind of like the first TV husband who acted like that.

Part and parcel of The Decline of the American Empire.
Have you also noticed how most husbands on sitcoms are overweight and most wives are slimbabes? etc etc

Hollywood's attempt at identity politics. It is easy for some people, sometimes well meaning, to confuse equality of opportunity, with equality of identity.
