When you put a specimen underneath the microscope, you see it in the opposite direction. When you slide the specimen up it will be seen down and if you slide it down it will be seen up. Samething occurs when you sllide it left or right.

Because light going through a prism is inverted.

Thats why binoculars have 2 prisms for each side..

Why the microscope only has 1 or an odd number, i can only guess at an attempt to save light quality reduction through excessive refraction.
