Agriculture is very labor intensive, it can only be made profitable if you can keep the labor costs down, thus slavery is quite attractive.
There was no electricity or technology. The simple things we take for granted, clean clothes, dishs, transportation, etc. required a great deal of man hours to accomplish.
The only real disadvantage was to the owners soul, serious ethical implications in slave ownership.
Technology would have rendered slavery obsolete within a century in any case, in advanced industrial countries.
It has been estimated that the technology that surrounds each of us in the modern world is the equilivent of 200 slaves for each of us.

The slaves and their owners were both getting a bad deal. They would have been better off to free them and pay them for their work. In many cases, the Stockholm syndrome made the slaves feel a part of the family and they worked for the common good. This was probably the only good thing about slavery. If this did not take place, the slaves had no incentive to be productive and no responsibility. Many of the slaves fought against the north to preserve their way of life. Most were treated fairly and provided food, clothing, and what medical care that was available at the time. They had better birth records than the white, because of their tax records.

Some advantages were that the americans did not have to pay the slaves for work that they could easily do, so their job was much easier and much more lucrative. It really pumped some money into the economy, so the country could do a lot more with it. some disadvantages are that they were taking people away from their homes just to work. Also, they did not pay them, so they have no freedom at all.

Everyone today knows that the institution of slavery is evil and should never have happened. There should not have been a genocide of the Native Americans nor should their land have been taken away. American settlers lived in a different world and did many things which would be deemed unacceptable today. We all need to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of all of the people in America's history; then go on with our lives and act like we have earned the right to live in the United States of America.

there were no advantages if you were a slave... but, if you were the slave master, you had some one else doing your work... a disadvantage to slave ownership, to be honest with you, I can't come up with anything, b/c if you own something or someone you have the upper hand over them.

IF one is talking aboiut pre-Revolution, than one must consider that most of the slave were actually white. This was because people were dying to come to america under any contract. It was not until later, when less travel was coming from europe, that black slaves used. This was bcause they were readily available and cheaper then white labor.

I'm black and i disagree with all the above answers ::: 1st Our ancestors sold us to the white Dutch who sold to slave traders
2nd those that made it to America were sold for approxmentley $1,000.00 each and that was a lot of money in those days so the slave owner made sure his property was well cared for
3rd Slavery in the Americas got us away from the ones who sold us
4th Ironicaly slavery still exist in our home land and i dont want to go back//Thanks for making me a slave !!!

One of the benefits would be that the slaves could do a lot of the back breaking work that needed to be done. These slaves were stronger physically than the colonists were. Therefore they could acomplish more of the work.

It was great for the slave owners because they didn't need to pay their workers so they got rich. It stimulated the economy of the area.

As far as the downsides, obvoiusly blacks had their rights completely removed which is wrong.
