A great resource for the history of fashion is www.costumes.org, which this professor from Alaska runs. Here is the link to the 60s page: http://www.costumes.org/history/100pages/1960links.htm

What society thinks as "60s" (mod, hippie, etc), was really not popular until the late 60s and early 70s. It depends on what you are interested in. Fashion began to change rapidly by this point- about every 8 years a new silhouette became popular.

we wore fig leafs and hulla skirts. LOL LOL

ok...we wore clothing tighter than we do now. We had capri pants. The beginning of the 60's we mostly wore cotton clothing.
Tshirts never had anything written on them.

Middle to end of 60's we wore bell bottom jeans and hippie styles
Polyester became popular. I had polyester orange bell bottom pants. I had dresses that were A skirts. Lots of the styles I see now are very similuar to the sixtys. For dressy wear I had pointed toe high heals. We always matched the same color purse with the shoes. Skirts were very short. We wore Navy like wool jackets. In the sixties we tended to be more uniform in style...now there seems to be a variety of style and types of dressing.

I had knee shocks to go with my wrap around skirt. We carried all our books around, we never heard of a back pack.

We sometimes wore bobby socks rolled down at our anckles and the origional tennis shoes.

We wore slips with skirts and dresses. Near the end of the sixties we started to grow our hair very long. I had waist length hair.

We had madrus shirts. Babydoll blouses.

We wore mood rings. Which I see in the stores now.
Seems like the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Watch some TV like good times, they were black but they wear the clothes. We wore bell bottom pants, with peace signs on them or on chains around our necks. We had hair...guys and gals, some frizzed out some long and straight. We wore headbands a lot tied around our foreheads like the indians. A lot of patches on our jeans. Lots of beads and neclaces. Hoop earrings. Vests for the guys, either suede, leather or bright colors. Long sleeves, puffy and long blouses and shirts. Rent an old
Woodstock documentary or something from that era and you will get the picture. The style is coming back but it's toned down, not as out there man or as groovy...cheech and chong..get the idea?

One thing we wore in the 60's was hip hugger jeans, I believe they are now called low riders. When I was married in 1966, I wore my hip huggers,a tie died halter top and sandals :) I wore granny dresses when I was pregnant, very comfortable. Actually a lot of the clothes my grand-daughters wear are very much like what I wore in the late 60s and early 70's.

In my high school i was not allowed to wear slacks or short s to school. It was dresses everyday and i hated it. Guys wore slacks and shirts to school. Jeans were unheard of unless you were hayseed Hank. Dressing as hippies never cane til the late 60's and early 70's.

sweaters, penny loafers, skirts below the knee. Go to google, then go to images, then type in 60's clothing, and that should bring up some good stuff. Oh, if you're under 18 you want to make sure your preferences are set so you don't get any gross stuff:)

go go boots, miniskirts, then granny dresses for the ladies (chicks)
beatle boots, tight black pants, carnaby st. fashion shirts, then fringed leather pants, fringed leather vests, beads, super long hair, head bands for the guys
and buttons with sayings like Stop The War, No Draft, and Support Mental Health Or I'll Kill You, etc.

Early 60's--clean cut and wholesome looking. Think Beach Boys.

Late 60's---jeans, long hair, generally scruffy/hippy looking.
