We didn't always have the technology to get deep enough to photograph it. They had to develop a special submarine that could go that deep in order to find it and take pictures. Before that, the pressure that deep in the ocean was just too high for anything to make it down there.

Because it was almost 14 miles away from where it originally sank. And a 14 mile diameter search on the bottom of the ocean is literally like trying to find a piece of hair in a hay stack even for a ship that size.

Have you ever heard the saying that we know more about outer space than we do about our own oceans? It's true.
The oceans are harder to explore because of the high water pressure in deep water and the fact that sunlight does not reach past a certain depth.

they did not have the technology to make a submarine that could handle the pressure of the deep sea depths but now they do.

One, they really did not know where they sank. Two, their technology sucked and when they had the technology they used it to fight wars. Three, someone finally cared. :)
