It has been shown to increase risk of heart disease. The more important stat though is your homocystine level. That is a much more significant number. Most doctors unfortunately rarely check it because they don't have a drug to drop the number. It like cholesterol can be significantly reduced by diet, excercise, and nutritional supplementation. All three are equally important. Diet is important for many reasons but the goal should be a well planned low glycemic diet it has numerous positive effects on health like reducing syndrome X and reversing insulin resistance. Next, excercise blow out the pipes a little and you will be healthier! You do not have to train for a marathon just get the heart pumpin a bit. Last nutritional supplementation, it gives the body the building blocks it needs for cellular nutrition. When you have the right combination in the right dosage and bioavailable levels the results will amaze you. It keeps LDL cholesterol from oxidizing and forming clots in the artery. This does not mean you can eat 3 Big mac's a day just that the body can protect itself when given the right plan.

First, what do you mean by "high" cholesterol? 210? 275? 325? Higher?
Elevated cholesterol should be a concern at any age. Diet and exercise can help immensely. If that proves insufficient, there are prescription drugs available that can lower your cholesterol, and keep it stable.
The problem is that if you don't start to address the problem at age 30, it will get worse and worse, and by age 55, you may barely be able to function. The earlier you start to treat it, the better off you'll be. But start with diet and exercise, before going onto medication.

Who cares. You want to live forever? Every year or so, they come up with new diseases so they can sell more drugs and keep the med biz in biz. I say, we are not here for a long time, so have a good time and quit worrying.
