Because living cells do something! Reserchers muse see living cells what is doing someting. Cells are so microscopic, you only see cells in a microscope.

Technically, since everyone's skin and hair is nothing but dead cells, we look at nothing but dead cells all day, so I don't know.

The dead cells could have had some of their parts disintegrated, especially if they were not preserved naturally.
