Yes. If you have them from a young enough age... around 6-7 weeks old you can teach them to do pretty much anything.

I owned a just 6 weeks old female rat and i would handle her for several hours a day, hand feed her, and leave her cage open so she had the run of my bungalow. She would always return to her cage for food, water and toiletting. When I got some mice I had to split the sexes and had to put the females in her cage until i could get another one, i made a little den in my room with bedding and water/food etc but every night she would jump up on my bed, and curl up by my feet much like a dog would.

She would also give kisses if i put my nose up against her cage lol.

she was the best pet ever. It takes a while for them to get set in a routine but when they do its great.

You can, it will just take some time and a lot of patience. I took a couple of psychology classes and they actually do a lot of psychological tests on rats because of the high level of intelligence that rats have. Good luck!

Doesn't it depend on what you want them to do?

I mean, it should be easy to train a rat to squeak the Overture from Swan Lake but much harder to train it to hoot like an owl.

You're trying to train them to hoot like an owl, aren't you?

Use food as incentive, whenever they do something right (even if by accident) they get a treat. They're supposed to be bright so it should work, good luck!
