Maybe, the motherboard manufactuer will have a list of compatible processors for the board. A bios change might also be needed for an upgraded processor. Do all processors with the same socket work on all motherboards with the same socket? No.

Yes, but with a condition. The speed limit is based on the sytems bios. If the bios doesn't recognize the speed of a faster chip it won't work to its fullest potential. Go to the motherboard manufacturer and find a listing of the compatible processors. In some cases upgrading the bios will increase the processor speeds handled by the motherboard.

You can attemp to do his if your new processor is not much higher than the one you have now. But the best way is to find out what your motherboard supports. Depending on brand and model you can look up the specs of your MOBO and it would say how high you can go.
