They go hand in hand. But most of the times you can improve anything by practicing. I've been taking voice lessons for almost 3 years now and I'm just noticing some improvements in my voice. Notes that were very hard to sound out are now coming out much easier.

I have never had voice lessons but, I have been singing all my life. I am in a band now and I love it. I dont necessarily like the sound of a trained voice, or a singer who is influenced by another and wants to sound like them. I think the individuality in your own voice is what makes for a good singer, but that is just my personal opinion. =)

You've got to have both - all the training in the world isn't going to help if you just can't sing while training can help in the techical department.

Look at {or listen to} Bob Dylan , niether talent nor training. Then listen to Pavorotti , Both talent and training. I like them both.
