Actually we are not.
Russia, India, and China are much larger polluters than the USA.
Our rivers, lakes, and valleys are much cleaner than those three countries I listed above.
Not every thing you read is correct.

Yes we have some slobs, greedy bastards, and just plain dumb people. But it only takes one bad apple to spoil the barrel.
I think we have more good ones than bad.
